Youngsters to converge on Maraetai for Auckland champs

Issue date

Maraetai is known as "the meeting place by the sea" and for three days later this month will play host to more than 300 young sailors as part of the Auckland championships.

The Maraetai Sailing Club are hosting the Optimist (open and green), Starling, RS Feva, 29er and 420 fleets as part of the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland championships. The three-day regatta from January 26-28 will also incorporate the Auckland Anniversary Day regatta.

It is the second time Maraetai have hosted the Auckland championships - the first was in 2016 - and it's expected to be the largest regatta run out of the club, with many sailors coming from outside the region.

"This one promises to be even better [than 2016]," Maraetai Sailing Club commodore Murray Peddie said. "We're a small and friendly club but we punch above our weight.

"We have great facilities with easy access and awesome over-water clubrooms. There's also a lovely reserve area for participating sailors and teams and the all-tide launching is a real bonus as well."

Entries are open until January 24. Some late entries might be accepted, and will incur a $50 late fee, but no entries for the Optimist green and open fleets will be accepted after 7pm on January 24.
