Recently two young New Zealand board sailors, Lauren Mackenzie and Finn Croft, travelled with Coach Dave Robertson to compete at the 2015 RS:X Youth World Championships on in Gdynia, Poland from 11-18 July.
Dave Robertson reports; “The regatta was some of the most challenging racing I have ever seen.”
“All the races were run in an offshore breeze blowing off a forest and a city making for challenging racing mentally. With up to 15 knots variation on the course and 60 degree wind shifts every leg of the course.”
“The kiwis did well to keep their cool and post consistent results to qualify for the Gold fleet. The Gold fleet round of racing saw an increase in wind and Lauren managed to keep her position of 18th overall. Finn gave his all but unfortunately fell down the standings on the last two days.”
“Both Finn and Lauren will have taken a huge amount out of racing at the highest level. Both sailors are young enough to compete in the Youth Worlds again next year in Cyprus and will be keen to improve on this year’s great efforts.”
Finn also competed in the Youth European Championship ( Mondello, Sicily) before the RS:X Youth Worlds and finished 29th out of the fleet of 76.
