For the second year in a row Slipstream III, now skippered by new owner Mark Bond, won the recent Young 88 national title in Auckland.
Bond's crew sailed a consistent regatta, winning four of the 11 races and never finishing outside of the top three in the 12-strong fleet. Their score of 16 points was six points ahead of Skitzo, helmed by Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron youth training programme graduate David Hazard, with War Machine, skippered by Mike Leyland, in third (38 points).
“It’s been a great first nationals with the fleet," Bond said. "There was a lot of tight racing with only ever a few seconds between finishes. Right til the end it was anyone’s game.”
Hazard also remarked how tricky the conditions were, stating that: “quite often someone would come out of the back of the fleet having picked a good shift. Overall we’ve really enjoyed the weekend and are looking forward to next year”.
War Machine was third overall but first on handicap and first corinthian crew.
