YNZ sees exciting potential in A2B Yacht Race announced today

Issue date

New Zealand has an exciting new high profile yacht race on the calendar with the launch of the A2B Blue Water Classic Yacht Race announced today at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

The opening edition of the race is set to take place in February 2014 and its anticipated the A2B will become an iconic kiwi blue-water ocean race.

Yachting New Zealand Chief Executive David Abercrombie has this to say; “I believe that the A2B represents an exciting opportunity for New Zealand to attract a fleet of national and international yachts, to capture greater profile for keelboat racing in New Zealand, and also to showcase the race start and finish ports.”

“Nationwide we have terrific Race Management expertise, event organising capability and renowned hospitality and entrepreneurial spirit across the country – if we can bring all that to this yacht race it has the potential to become a fantastic annual event.”

Abercrombie continues; “As the A2B develops future editions could include an organised return rally with yachts stopping at designated ports allowing more of New Zealand’s yacht clubs to play a part.”

Auckland’s Royal Akarana Yacht Club is charged with the role of Race Organising Authority working in collaboration with the Bluff Yacht Club who will provide a warm welcome at the race destination.

Celebrations and festivities will be staged at both the starting and finishing ports with the Deep South keen to capitalise on this opportunity to develop a reputation as a yachting destination and to encourage new marina development locally.
