Women-led Vixen Racing hits Bay of Islands regatta

Issue date

Vixen Racing is set to make a statement at Bay of Islands Sailing Week 2026, bringing more than just a yacht to the start line. The team represents a new campaign and a bold mission: to push boundaries in offshore sailing while creating pathways for people - particularly women - who might not normally see themselves in that arena.

What makes Vixen Racing’s appearance especially significant is the alignment with SheSails NZ, a cornerstone of Yachting New Zealand's Women and Girls in Sailing strategy and a proud supporter of the Bay of Islands Sailing Week. SheSails NZ exists to champion participation, leadership, and visibility for women in sailing, and Vixen Racing is a clear embodiment of that vision. The team is female-focused, inclusive, and committed to developing leadership opportunities in offshore racing. Most of the shareholders are women, each bringing experience, ambition, and the drive to make a tangible difference in the sport.

"It's about showing what's possible," said Sharon Ferris-Choat, renowned sailor and one of the driving forces behind the team. "Vixen is our test lab, classroom, raceboat and pathway to elite ocean sailing - all in one."

While the team is new to some events, the members are far from inexperienced. Boat captain and chief mate Taylor Edwards is progressing toward a skipper qualification, and other shareholders are pursuing higher maritime certifications. Some bring decades of experience, while others are formalising skills through formal training. Together, they are building a culture that values mentorship, collaboration, and learning as much as performance.

Bay of Islands Sailing Week, running from 19-23 January 2026, is the perfect stage for this evolving team. Now in its 23rd year, the regatta offers four days of strategic courses, island racing, and the natural beauty of the Bay of Islands. For Vixen Racing, it is a chance to test the boat, refine the crew, and showcase their approach to inclusive offshore sailing. The focus is not solely on winning; it is about connection - with fellow sailors, young aspiring crews, and the broader sailing community.

Registrations for Sailing Week 2026 are open, and a strong fleet is already confirmed. The event welcomes experienced sailors, club competitors, and newcomers alike, offering competitive racing alongside social gatherings and community engagement. A Crew Finder is available for those seeking a team or additional crew, and entries can be submitted via TopYacht.
