What's new for the 2016 PIC Coastal Classic

Issue date

Countdown to the 2016 race!

The NZMYC team is stoked to launch the PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic for 2016. Whether you consider the 119nm race to Russell a sprint or a marathon, it's the 34th time that sailors have come together with the NZMYC to race up the coast at Labour Weekend. This year we have a new website, a new solo division, and we welcome back all returning competitors, new ones, and our fantastic family of sponsors, including PIC Insurance Brokers, that come together to make the event possible. Entries will open soon and we are looking forward to counting down to 21 October with you.

Free seminar for new entrants

Are you a first timer to the Coastal, or a returning entrant keen to get some advice from those who have been there before? This free clinic will cover off all you need to know to get to the start line of this challenging race from Auckland to Russell. Topics include boat preparation, safety equipment, developing a crew, divisions and handicaps, and what to expect in Russell. Details: 7pm, Thursday 4 August, at the new Zhik Store in Victoria Park Market, Auckland. To RSVP please email info@coastalclassic.co.nz

New solo division

There is an ever increasing number of sailors that want to challenge themselves over long distances, single handed. If you are one of them, you might be keen to check out the new single handed division that we have established for the 2016 race. There is also a two handed division, and 16 other divisions to cover all types of boats. Keen?

Charting the race

The eastern coast of the North Island is a pretty great place to be. Our race director Matt Flynn has written a description of the six stages of the course. See if it matches with your experience of the race north!

Great value entry package

Entry in the Coastal gets you a whole bunch more than just a race. We have slightly increased our entry fee this year to reflect the costs of running a race. Be assured, our committee meet all year round to make the event happen and to deliver to you, as part of your boat's entry fee set in 2016 at $240: two free race clinics, a race briefing, skipper's packs, race management including safety provisions, online coverage, water taxis from the time of arrival of the first boat through to 10am on the Sunday for all of your crew, a prize giving with amazing prizes, and the party of the year in Russell.  We aim to deliver great value and we hope you agree it is.
