Wellington turned on the wind for 2015 Youth Match Racing Nationals

Issue date

Windy Wellington lived up to its name over the four days of the 2015 Youth Match Racing Nationals held from the 1-4 of October at the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Cub.

Eight under-23 youth teams were selected to attend coming from Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Canterbury Yachting and Queen Charlotte Yacht Club.

Day one started with the wind forecast to over 40 knots and it did for the first two days and the race officer wisely called no racing. Day three saw the start of racing starting in perfect conditions and then the wind falling off. A round robin was completed.

Day 4 Wellington again turned the wind on with a forecast of up to 40 plus knots and racing was cancelled.

The completed round robin saw some extremely tight racing amongst all the crews highlighting the quality of youth sailing and the competitive nature of the event.

At the end of the racing Auckland’s Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron won out closely followed by Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club's crews in second and third.
