Sanders Cup

Wellington pair end domination at Sanders Cup

Issue date

There was a new winner of the Sanders Cup for the first time in six years as the Wellington pair of Wade McGee and Demian Dixon toppled their Northland rivals recently.

Northland's Phil McNeil and Craig Gilberd had won the last five Sanders Cup regattas, marking an exceptional winning streak in the 98-year history of this competition, but they couldn't fight off the challenge of McGee and Dixon this time around. The Wellington pair also won the invitation race, meaning they also took home the impressive Kingham Trophy.

The longest running continuously held senior interprovincial challenge was this year hosted by the Horowhenua Sailing Club in Motuoapa.

Races were sailed in a variety of conditions which saw seven boats achieve top-three finishes.

McGee and Dixon sailed consistently well, winning two races and never finishing outside the top three, to finish four points ahead of McNeil and Giberd with Canterbury's Antje Mulleer and Jake Tennent a further point behind in third.

The fleet will come together again on March 9-10 for Taupo regatta before the national championships at Howick on March 29-31.
