Wellington Optisail attracts 40 young sailors

Issue date

40 sailors from every dinghy club in Wellington attended the Wellington Optisail held recently at the Titahi Bay Boating Club.

Day one was superb with hot sunny conditions and a moderate northerly to test the sailors, some were just out of their clubs’ learn-to-sail programs. The decision to have a night sail while the weather was good turned out to be a good call, getting off the water around 10.30pm.

Day two saw the forecasted strong southerly turn up, and the decision was made to tow some of the Optis around to Shelly Bay and sail there which worked well until it got really fresh. After lunch it was time to head back to Titahi Bay, sailors enjoying the ride in the ribs.

Day three was shortened as the southerly pounded in but overall it was a great Optisail camp.

Thanks to John and Hillary Goodman and their onshore team of helpers, also to Milly Joseph from Yachting New Zealand and to the younger club coaches from Plimmerton, Paremata and Heretaunga who were coaching at their first camp and to the clubs that lent their ribs.
