Light winds on both days of the Bayley’s Real Estate Wanganui Regatta tested sailors competing in the regatta which doubled as the Western Districts Champs.
It was good to see lots of local youth sailors competing in toppers, splash and starlings. Wanganui still continues to draw a good paper tiger and laser fleet and with the addition of a four 470s topped off a great regatta. Saturday evening's trip up the Whanganui river aboard the river boat for dinner at a pub and to catch the cricket was a new venture and well received by all.
A couple of days after the regatta we learned of the passing of Terry Coles who was a great stalwart of the club over many years. Involved in both the Paper Tiger and Hartley 16 classes, Terry was also instrumental among others in getting the schools program up and running at Pauri Lake and devoted a huge amount of his time coaching the young sailors.
Terry was awarded a Yachting New Zealand Honour Award in 2009 (below) for his contribution to sailing and will be sadly missed.
