Waikawa Boating Club receive generous gift

Issue date

The Waikawa Boating Club are the recipients of a new support boat after a generous benefactor donated the Brede class lifeboat Girvan to the club.

Girvan, which is 10m long and weighs 8.6 tons, will be used as a support, committee or start boat for the cruising and racing activities of the Waikawa Boating Club and with two 230 HP engines can reach a top speed of 20 knots.

She started life in Girvan, Scotland, as a rescue boat for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. She began work for the Nelson Coastguard in 1993 after being replaced in the UK by larger lifeboats, and continued in that capacity until 2012.

Girvan now resides on the club berth and out in the bay on Tuesday nights instead of Blue Peter.

The Waikawa Boating Club would like to acknowledge the very generous gift from a benefactor who wanted to remain anonymous and his passion for cursing and yachting at the club and in the Marlborough Sounds.
