Volvo Sailing… Have a Go! part of the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover public experience

Issue date

The Volvo Sailing… Have a Go! programme gives people the opportunity to experience the thrills and spills of sailing in a safe and well managed environment and most importantly, have fun!

The programme has teamed up with the 2015 Auckland Volvo Ocean Race Stop Over with race village visitors having the opportunity to sail one of four Topper Omega yachts within the Race Village, and learn the basics, all for free!

After a short safety briefing, sailors don a lifejacket and head out for a sail with a Yachting New Zealand skipper in the safe and protected waters of the Viaduct Basin. You may even end up sailing with one of New Zealand’s Olympic Sailors.

Anyone who is keen to get hands-on with the boat is welcome to trim the sails and be an active part of sailing the boat. The experience is for ages 5 and up, with those between 5 and 8 years of age needing to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Andrew Clouston, Participation and Development Manager at Yachting New Zealand says, “Our aim is for people to have fun, learn something and keep on sailing”.

Anyone keen to carry on with their sailing instruction will be provided information on where they can continue their lessons.

This experience has been made possible with the help of Sport New Zealand.

The general public can show up at the Yachting New Zealand activation site at Karanga Plaza in the Wynyard Quarter from 10am to 4pm daily to make a booking for a sailing time (with sailing to take place up till 5pm).  Bookings are required on the day at the registration area.

More about Volvo Sailing… Have a Go!

The Volvo Sailing...Have a go! programme began in 2006 helping realise the dream of Sir Peter Blake that all children should get the chance to go sailing. Running the programme is made possible thanks to the support of The Team New Zealand 2000 Trust, the Lion Foundation and Volvo Cars New Zealand.
