Top quote for me was "Fun is really really really important", and yes, he said "really" three times!
Unfortunately, this coaches convention was the same weekend as the Sir Peter Blake Regatta, which meant many sailing coaches could not make it. Luckily for us though, some of the presentations and speeches were recorded. Watch Steve's video here
A noteable interview was with Steve Hansen. He shares some awesome insights to what it takes to be a great leader and coach. It is very worthwhile watching, however, if you are short on time, here are a couple of points I picked out:
3 key things as a leader
1) Self Awareness
2) Alignment - are you aligned with the team around you, your sailors, parents, clubs, are your sailors aligned with you?
3) Vunerable - shows trust, empathy and don't be afraid to say "I don't know"
And some pretty cool quotes:
"You don't have to know everything"
"What you do need to know is where to find the answers you don't know"
"Your job is to inspire them through that environment of learning and fun"
"The most important thing you can do in your coaching career whether it's a team or individual is identify what are the critical few things that make the boat go faster. Should only be about three or four of them. Spend 99% of the time getting those right"
