Top racing expected at keelboat nationals

Issue date

It’s keelboat nationals season at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, with both the women's and open events coming up over the next month.

Proceedings kick off with the Barfoot & Thompson NZ Women’s Keelboat National Championships on May 1-2 and are followed by the Theland NZ Open Keelboat National Championship on May 15-16.

Both events include two days of windward-leeward fleet racing in the MRX fleet, with the courses set in the Northern Leading area.

Last year’s women’s event included a 10-strong fleet and some spectacular racing in solid breeze. Karleen Dixon and her experienced team came out on top, but it’s all to race for again this year with a host of strong female teams of all ages entered to take part.

Entry is still open, and all the details, including the notice of race and online entry can be found here.

Last year's Theland Open Keelboat Nationals attracted 14 entries with teams from all around the country. This year's Theland Race Team will be skippered by professional sailor and Mastercard YTP graduate Chris Steele, who will be putting together an all-star team to rival last year’s victorious Theland Race Team skippered by Sam Meech.

Entry for this prestigious event is open and more regatta details can be found here
