Top officials share wisdom with aspiring race officers

Issue date

The number of national race officers looks set to increase after a good number completed a race management seminar in Auckland recently and those in Wellington have the chance to join them at an upcoming seminar.

As many as 11 race officers from eight Auckland clubs attended the recent two-day seminar at the Takapuna Boating Club, which was sponsored by the Auckland Yacht and Boating Association and presented by John Parrish (an international race officer) and Linda Parrish. Megan Kensington, who along with Parrish officiated at last year's Tokyo Olympics, also shared some of her experiences.

Nine attendees sat the test, and all achieved the 80 per cent required to take the next steps in the qualification process. Seven are working towards becoming national race officers or revalidating this qualification, one is at the beginning of the journey to club race officer and another has aspirations to become an international race officer.

"I enjoyed the seminar," said Paul. "John and Linda were excellent as usual, taking time to get the course material across to us. Many of their experiences were discussed, which provided visual and verbal examples surrounding the topics we investigated. A good use of tools, apps etc was practiced.

"I would say the seminar was of high value and well presented."

Another seminar is being held by John and Linda Parrish now at the Evans Bay Yacht Club in Wellington on August 13-14. See here for more information, including details on how to register.
