Eagle Elliott 5.9

Suspense builds in the Elliott 5.9 Southern Circuit

Issue date

The second round of the Elliott 5.9 Southern Circuit will take place this weekend in, Lyttelton at Naval Point Yacht Club.

The regatta from 3-4 December is part of a three part series based in the South Island, and attracts a competitive fleet to guarantee tight racing.

This weekend  ‘Boat 1’, (Shane Smith(, is picked as the boat to beat, as their closest competition in ‘Retro’ (Carla Bennet), will sit the regatta out.

‘Eagle’, (Mark Howard), can never be counted out. After a slightly disappointing South Island Championship, Eagle will be looking to bounce back into contention before returning to their home waters of Nelson for the final regatta.

‘Rapido’, (Mike Wright) is an unknown quantity. Rapido has been a constant presence in the South Island Elliott 5.9 fleet over many years, and after missing the South Island Championship, there will be much interest to see how they go.

At least another five Christchurch based boats are committed to the South Series #2 regatta. Brillant, Chop, Magpie, Spurt and Bob will also be on the start line so this will be another strong turn out for the South Island fleet.

Taurus Engineering have kindly come on board as sponsor for this Southern Circuit Elliott 5.9 regatta and will be supporting with daily prizes. There will also be a class BBQ on the Saturday night.

About The Elliott 5.9

The Elliott 5.9 emerged in the early 1980’s as a high performing trailer yacht and continues to deliver competitive one design racing in a welcoming fleet of world-class sailors and novices alike. The boats started a revolution with their well-balanced and cost effective design, and quickly became the boat of choice for top club training schemes and a breeding ground for NZ’s America’s Cup, Ocean Race and Olympic champions.

Sailed by a crew of three, the Elliott 5.9 remains a low maintenance sailboat with an efficient single spreader fractional rig, a well-balanced sail plan and practical deck layout. Whether sailing among mixed trailer yachts, sport boat fleets or in a one design setting, the 5.9 is celebrated for its responsiveness and outstanding value.
