Lawson's Dry Hills New Year Regatta

Strong numbers expected at Lawson's Dry Hills New Year Regatta

Issue date

More than 60 boats are expected for the Lawson's Dry Hills New Year Regatta, making it the largest keelboat regatta in New Zealand south of Auckland.

Entries have already been received from boats based in Nelson, Canterbury and Wellington across the five divisions, as well as a gaggle from hosts Waikawa Boating Club. The Lawson’s Dry Hills New Year Regatta will be held on January 12-13, with the invitation twilight race kicking things off on the evening of January 11.

“We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of this regatta, something we’ve done for 12 years now," Lawson's Dry Hills group marketing manager Belinda Jackson said. "It’s a great local event that continues to grow and it also supports our wider sponsorship of Yachting New Zealand."

Many of the more than 100 boat owners contacted by organisers are looking to combine the regatta with a cruising holiday on the picturesque waters of Queen Charlotte Sound.

“We tend to take for granted the world-class cruising on our doorstep," regatta convenor Juliet Abbott said. "The feedback from our visitors is a good reminder that boats come to Waikawa for a variety of reasons and the fact that we are such an attractive destination certainly helps when we are making the calls to attract visiting boats.”
