Yachting New Zealand has today announced the appointment of Steve Armitage as its new chief executive, succeeding David Abercrombie after more than 14 years in the role.
Armitage is a seasoned major events and hospitality leader with significant experience across both the public and private sectors. He joins Yachting New Zealand from Hospitality New Zealand, where he has served as chief executive since June 2023.
"I am pleased to welcome Steve who, after a very thorough search and competitive selection process, emerged as the most outstanding candidate to lead our sport at an exciting and important time," said Yachting New Zealand board chair Greg Knowles.
"Steve is of Ngāpuhi descent with strong connections to Whangārei and the Far North. He comes to us from Hospitality New Zealand, a membership-based organisation, where he was noted for his availability to members and his ability to build genuine connections."
Armitage's background in major sporting events and tourism includes leading the development of Auckland's major events portfolio, overseeing global events such as the Cricket World Cup, the 36th America's Cup, the FIFA Women's World Cup and the Rugby World Cup.
He has held senior roles including managing director of a strategic consultancy specialising in events and tourism, and general manager destination at Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (now Tātaki Auckland Unlimited). He also led the Auckland Convention Bureau to position the city as a premium destination for domestic and international business events.
Earlier in his career, Armitage advised the New Zealand Government on tourism and other portfolios, served as chair of Business Events Industry Aotearoa, and is currently co-chair of the Tourism Data Leadership Group.
"Like so many Kiwis, my connection to our coastlines and beaches runs deep - from childhood days on the water to watching my daughter recently discover sailing for herself," said Armitage. "Being in or on the water is part of the fabric of our nation, and I'm looking forward to helping keep that legacy strong."
Steve Armitage will start in his new role on September 22,2025.
Armitage said he is eager to meet Yachting New Zealand's clubs, sailors, sponsors and other stakeholders to understand what matters most to them.
"New Zealand's sailing community is made up of passionate officials, participants and supporters right across the motu, each with their own unique strengths and needs. Coming from a membership-based organisation, I understand how vital it is to connect with these communities. I'm committed to listening, learning, and supporting sailing at every level."
Knowles also acknowledged Abercrombie's long and valued contribution to the sport.
"I would like to thank David for his tremendous contribution over many years and wish him all the best for his next chapter," Knowles said.
Armitage will begin in his new role on September 22, 2025. Yachting New Zealand's national sport development director, Raynor Haagh, will serve as interim CEO in the meantime.
