The weekend of 22-23 August is worth marking on your calendar. The IOM South Island Championship is being held in your area. The Radio Yacht Squadron Nelson has done a great job in organising this event, and will host the event at Easton’s Pond, on the Coastal Highway (between Tasman and Motueka about 6.5 kms from Motueka).
The IOM (International One Metre) Class is arguably the most competitive radio sailing class, and it attracts many full size sailors into the sport; including some top international sailors. Full size boat sailors might be surprised at how competitive the racing is, and how challenging the radio controlled boats are to sail. Many of the elements of full size sailing are there. Rules situations, tactics and changing wind conditions require fast responses. It’s a bit like watching a full size race from shore or on TV – except you are in control. Boat set up is all done on shore. Once boats are on the water the skipper has control over the rudder and the sheets.
There will be well over 30 boats divided into 2 fleets, with promotion or relegation after each heat.
Visitors are very welcome. So come along, have a look, and have a chat with some of our sailors. Racing starts at 10 am both days and goes through till around 3-4 pm.
