Elliott 5.9

Slam Dunk take over lead in E5.9 series

Issue date

The ever-consistent Slam Dunk made the most of the mainly light conditions to win the fourth round of the Elliott 5.9 Traveller Series at Bucklands Beach recently and jump to the overall lead in the series.

With sailing possible only on the Saturday due to very light winds on the Sunday, Slam Dunk (Stu Clark, Cameron Horne and Stu Malloy) started the regatta strongly with two race wins and were never headed.

Shapeshifter, who finished second, finished well, including a race win in race six.

Nevis/Blurr had mixed results but still managed a race win and a second placing to ensure they held on for third place.

The tight competitive Elliott 5.9 racing was again to the fore with five different race winners over the six races and race starts were fiercely contested. A number of boats were caught out over the start line early and this proved costly for some.

Overall, the conditions were generally light with the occasional minor squall that touched on 20 knots. This kept everybody on their toes and provided a good mix of conditions across the races completed.

The Elliott 5.9 Traveller Series heads to Sandspit on September 24-25 for the final regatta in the series. Sandspit is always a popular venue, and the class will have their end-of-season celebration at the yacht club on the Saturday night.

Slam Dunk hold a handy overall points lead going into the final regatta but defending champions R+R are still in with a strong chance. Many other boats are separated by only a few points so many places are still to be decided right through the fleet.
