School teachers sail for free on Lion NZ

Issue date

The New Zealand Sailing Trust are offering school teachers a chance to sail on Lion New Zealand for free next month to help them better understand the work the organisation does.

The Trust are teaming up with BLAKE to offer a new five-day environmental leadership programme next year to provide students with the inspiration of leadership and environmental action through Sir Peter Blake’s legacy of sailing and environmentalism.

The free teacher sailing will take place on November 8 and Blake will join the NZ Sailing Trust to go through some of the activities the students will do as part of the new programme. It's also a great opportunity to experience the vessels used for both the new environmental leadership programme or schools programmes and also meet the crew and find out how the NZ Sailing Trust can offer schools a unique programme for students.

As much as 80 percent of the NZ Sailing Trust's business is giving young people the opportunity to sail these legendary boats - they also have Steinlager 2 as part of their fleet. Their trips have a focus on learning about the history of the boats, how they are sailed, the environment and a positive outcome is the students enhanced wellbeing.

The vessels are a great platform for the purposes of:

  • Leadership programmes or prefect induction courses
  • Boating Education NZ certificates such as dayskippers or boatmasters certificate
  • Experience for international students
  • Special needs or wellbeing programmes
  • Cross curricular programmes
  • Environmental leadership programme
