Sailors honoured at Massey University Harbour Sports Excellence Awards

Issue date

Sailing continued its tradition of success at the annual Massey University Harbour Sport Excellence Awards as seven sailors were recognized across three categories on 25 November.

For the third year in a row, 470 sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie won the Massey University International Team Performance of the year. However, this year the honor was shared with two-handed skiff 49erFX class sailors Alex Maloney and Molly Meech as both teams had brought home silver medals from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in their respective classes.

Laser Radial sailor George Gautrey was also awarded with the Cube Creative Print, Design & Signage Junior Sportsman of the Year, while 29er team Nick Egnot-Johnson and Jackson Keon received The Spencer on Byron Hotel Junior Team of the Year.

The 2015 Finn Gold Cup event was also recognized as the TASS Print Sporting Event of the Year.

The supreme winner went to New Zealand canoe sprinter and Olympic Champion Lisa Carrington who also won the Axis Sports Medicine Specialists Sportswoman of the Year Award, and Para Swimmer world record holder Cameron Leslie who took home the Shoe Science Albany and Takapuna Sportsman of the year award.

In all, 15 category winners were announced, with volunteering, club sport, officials and sporting events among the many other sectors of sport recognised.

“The Massey University Harbour Sport Excellence Awards are a wonderful reflection of the talented community that we have in this region” said Harbour Sport Chief Executive Toni-Maree Carnie. It is an honour to acknowledge so many achievements from 2016 at the awards”.
