The trust was formed to honour the memory of Sergeant Derek Wootton, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in Porirua in 2008. His tremendous commitment to the Porirua community inspired the establishment of this charity, which provides financial assistance to talented young individuals, groups and clubs within the Kapiti-Mana police district, in order to develop their academic, cultural, social and sporting activities.

To date the trust has distributed in excess of $70,000 to the youth of the Kapiti-Mana area, including $28,000 in secondary school scholarships, and recent grants to the following; Porirua Rowing Club, Aotea College Barbershop Chorus, and the Porirua College Samoan performance group. The grants have also helped recipients develop their talent in; ballet, waka ama, volleyball, piano, swimming, karting, TaeKwon-do and underwater hockey.

Our first priority every year is we offer a $2,000.00 scholarship to each of the seven public colleges in our area under the following conditions: The Principal identifies a student who in their view has the potential to successfully undertake Tertiary Studies but because of their economic circumstances would find this difficult
