The World Masters Games might be more than 100 days away but aspiring athletes need to move quickly with spots filling up fast for the sailing competition.
The deadline for registrations has been extended to March 3 but sailing is already at 70 percent capacity (it has been capped at 240 entrants). Six sports - archery, football, golf, softball, hockey and squash - have already sold out.
More than 25,000 competitors across 28 sports, including sailing, will take part in the World Masters Games in Auckland and the Waikato from April 21-30.
Sailing will be hosted by the Torbay Sailing Club on Auckland’s North Shore with competition in the Laser, Laser Radial (men and women) and Weta trimaran classes (single and double handed). There are a variety of age-group categories from apprentice master (35-44) through to great great grand master (75+) and age categories are determined by a competitor’s age at December 31, 2017.
Organisers are also looking for an army of 4000 volunteers and 3000 have already signed up.
The World Masters Games are more than a major sporting event, with the opening ceremony at Eden Park on April 21 seen as a highlight along with the chance to mingle with a host of athletes from around the world at the Games entertainment hub at the Queens Wharf on Auckland’s waterfront.
There will be a limited number of Wetas and Lasers available to charter for the event, with overseas entries given priority.
