Sail on iconic Blake boats for Coastal Classic

Issue date

They became synonimous with Sir Peter Blake and now you can take the chance to sail onboard Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand for October's PIC Coastal Classic.

The New Zealand Sailing Trust are offering spots on two of the boats Blake sailed in the Whitbread round the world yacht race for the Coastal Classic from Auckland to Russell on October 19.

Lion New Zealand was Blake's fourth attempt at the race in 1985/86 - she finished second but famously was struck by a whale on the second of four legs, causing damage to the rudder - and Blake won the 1989–90 Whitbread with Steinlager 2, when she took an unprecedented clean sweep of line, handicap and overall honours on each of the race's six legs.

The cost for the Coastal Classic is $575 per person for the race and $275 for the delivery of the boats back to Auckland, and includes food, accommodation, wet weather clothing, life jacket and harness.
