Dr Dave Austin's popular offshore medical course returns to the Royal Akarana Yacht Club on the weekend of November 15 and 16, offering essential emergency training for offshore sailors in the wake of several tragic on-water incidents in recent years.
The course, now in its 10th year, is taught by Austin - or "Dr Dave" - an intensive care specialist with extensive offshore sailing experience, including six Sydney-Hobarts and two two-handed Round North Island races. He’s joined by emergency nurse Bex Costello and short-handed sailing legend Sally Garrett.
"Participants can expect a practical, hands-on learning experience that includes everything from managing minor onboard injuries to dealing with major trauma, fractures, heart attacks, CPR, burns, suturing, dislocations, allergic reactions and even marine envenomation," Austin says. "The course is fully accredited by Yachting New Zealand and World Sailing for all category races, including the Sydney-Hobart and Volvo Ocean Race, and is equally suited to cruisers and racers."
The course costs $375, which includes morning and afternoon tea, with all profits donated to a yachting charity. It has received high praise from Volvo Ocean Race sailors and is considered by many to be the most useful and relevant medical course available to sailors.
