Regional Roundup - regatta calendar

Issue date

The four Yachting New Zealand regional development managers take a look at what has been happening in their areas and urge clubs to add their events to the YNZ regatta calendar.

Most clubs would have locked in dates by now for their major regattas for the upcoming season so it makes sense to add it to the Yachting New Zealand regatta calendar

Not only is this a good way to let people know about your event, it also ensures other clubs avoid scheduling something on the same day.

Follow the link above, login to our website (or create a login if you don’t already have one) and simply add your regatta details. You can even add a regatta promotional image and the notice of race.

Clubs and class associations wishing to run an annual national championship will need to submit an application form on our website for approval no later than June 30 or six months prior to the event start date, whichever occurs earlier. Once approved, all dates will be published on the regatta calendar.

Evans Bay Yacht & Motor Boat Club

Evans Bay Yacht & Motor Boat Club

Plenty of clubs are getting their seasons underway in a range of weather, from no wind one day to too much the next.

The Evans Bay Yacht & Motor Boat Club had very little puff for their first day of the season which included the keelboat interclub series.

Napier Sailing Club

Napier Sailing Club

In contrast, the Napier Sailing Club have had a miserable start to the season as they've endured the wettest spring in more than 50 years (and there are still a couple of months of spring to go).

They club's core dinghy fleets (22 boats) battled huge currents (due to the massive flow of fresh water), a decent 2.5m easterly swell and a 10-12 knot south-westerly over the weekend, prompting the race committee to run two very quick races.

Here's hoping the weather improves as the season kicks into full swing with the club's first learn to sail programme kicking off soon.

Murrays Bay Sailing Club

Starling

Registrations are open for next weekend's (July 15 & 16) Stack Winter Champs at the Murrays Bay Sailing Club and they are also holding a two-day coaching clinic in the leadup to the event.

Entry is open to Optimist green, Optimist open, O’pen Skiff, P Class, Starling development, Starling, ILCA 6 (Laser Radial), RS Feva, 420, 29er, Waszp, International Moth, 49er, 49erFX and Windfoil provided three or more boats of that class enter by the closing date. Wingfoil registrations will be entries on the day.

All the details can be found here, including links to the entry form and notice of race.

The club are also running a two-day coaching clinic on July 13-14 for Optimist (green and open), P Class and Starling sailors with details on the same link as above.

Coaching course

Coaching

As many as 12 aspiring coaches took part in a coaching course at Parua Bay near Whangarei last weekend.

The group, who were led by coach developer Averill Hibbard, was made up of a good mix of adults and teenagers and will be coaching with the Whangarei Cruising Club and Sail Northland this summer.

You can find out more about how to become a coach and access resources available here, and it also includes information about upcoming courses.

Hamilton Yacht Club

Hamilton Yacht Club

Drizzly weather threatened to dampen the start of Hamilton Yacht Club’s summer racing last weekend but the seasoned die-hards were there and there were some tight battles in the ILCA 7s (Lasers), ILCA 6s (Laser Radials) and Starlings (Zephyrs don’t do rain!).

Despite the forecast, the breeze was good and the rain held off until until later allowing four back-to-back races.

In the Starlings, Rose and Carly swapped leads in the various races, with Helen giving a little bit of on-the-water coaching, particularly around the starts.

There were some great battles in the ILCS 7s, with Werner claiming three guns, Scott one and John chasing pretty hard.

The lead changed multiple times in the ILCA 6s, with newcomer Jade giving Rick and Helen good competition. Rick and Helen shared two wins each.

Thanks to Rob, Hilary, John, Jim and Ray in the tower, and TV for mark laying.

Another points race is being held on Saturday.

Waiuku Yacht Club

Waiuku Yacht Club

The Waiuku Yacht Club have their opening weekend this weekend (Oct 8-9), featuring a spring regatta for Finns and J14s plus an Icebreaker for other classes.

The club will have a mix of of regular course racing, events including Up the Creek and cruising races over the course of the season, as well as their learn to sail programme.
