PIC Insurance Brokers takes Coastal Classic yacht race onboard

An independent New Zealand insurance brokerage with strong connections to the marine industry is the Coastal Classic’s new major sponsor.

The iconic race, which is recognised as one of the world’s ‘must do’ sailing events, will now be called the PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic.

PIC Insurance Brokers, which was founded in 1989, is already involved in the support of sailing through Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and the business already insures a large proportion of the event’s competitors.

“We enjoy our connections with sailing events on many levels and it’s the best way of staying close to the communities that we do business with,” says Daniel Garner of PIC Insurance, which has four offices in New Zealand, employing 60 staff.

Daniel says that the PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic is a race that sailors and non-sailors love. “It’s the start of the summer season, it’s big, it’s a challenge, it’s very social, and it’s got a great vibe about it. Our company will get involved in a big way, we are genuinely looking forward to it.”

PIC Insurance Brokers was also the company that recognised the difficulties for multihull owners in insuring their race boats and is working with the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club to develop a package for those owners.

Matthew Flynn, Commodore of The New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club, which organises the PIC insurance Brokers Coastal Classic, says, “PIC have already made a major contribution to New Zealand sailing, and their financial and practical support of the race will enable us to continue to deliver a great race for all competitors. We are counting down to the 2013 event now and looking forward to being with the PIC team in Russell.”

The 2013 PIC Insurance Brokers Coastal Classic starts at 10am on Friday 25 October. The race, which is 119 nautical miles long, starts off Devonport Wharf in Auckland, and finishes off Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands.

Up to 200 boats of all shapes and sizes are expected on the startline, making it one of the world’s biggest coastal yacht races.

A special clinic will be held to assist competitors, including newcomers, in the race preparation and winning strategy. Visit the website to register your interest.
