Organising a National Event? A Reminder on Requirements...

Issue date

Yachting New Zealand would like to ensure that we are maintaining the quality of our National events and that classes are aware of the requirements for a National event to be recognised by YNZ.

The regulation also aims to ensure all New Zealand sailors can be informed of the opportunity to compete for the title of “National Champion”.

Notice to Yachting New Zealand, all template documents can be found on the YNZ Web site.

  • The Major and National Event application form must be submitted to YNZ before the 30th June prior to the season and no later than 6 months before the competition, whichever is earlier.
  • A draft Notice of Race should be received by YNZ for approval at least 4 months prior to the event
  • A draft of the Sailing Instructions should be received by YNZ for approval two months prior to the event
  • The NOR shall be published and communicated to all clubs known to race the class, 3 months prior to the event.

Recognition of winners, the winner(s) of the events will be recognised as Yachting New Zealand National Champions provided that:

  • The event is a National Championship
  • A National Race Officer has run the event
  • All conditions of this Regulation 4.5.4 have been complied with
  • A minimum of six yachts must have started in any one race in the series (with the exception of the following classes:  Skud 18, 2.4, Sonar, Access  2.3, Access Liberty, Access 303 – Single Handed, Access 303 – Double Handed where 5 yachts must have started in any one race in the series).
  • Yachting New Zealand prescribes that the winner, regardless of nationality, shall be recognised as the Yachting New Zealand N ational Championship.

Post event, within two weeks after the event the organisers should forward to YNZ a complete set of results along with the completed event report.

Click here to view regulation YNZ 4.5.4 which goes into detail on what is required.  In the past our reviewing Race Officers have given quiet a lot of leniency on the deadlines.  Given the time it takes to review the regatta documents we cannot guarantee that this leniency will be granted in the future.
