Auckland Anniversary Day regatta

NZ’s oldest sporting event needs new sponsor

Issue date

At 182 years old, the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta lays claim to being the longest-running sporting event in New Zealand, even predating the America’s Cup by 11 years.

Now as it approaches its 183rd birthday on January 30, 2023, the regatta’s organisers are appealing for sponsors to help keep the event a permanent fixture on Auckland’s calendar.

“We feel very fortunate to have had the support of Ports of Auckland as our headline sponsor for the last few years,” regatta executive officer Joyce Talbot said. “But with their departure this year, there’s an exciting opportunity for another sponsor to take on naming rights to the regatta.”

There are also several other sponsorship options available at various investment levels. Talbot believes it’s a great opportunity for businesses to reach a huge number of Aucklanders, while supporting an important historic and sporting event.

She also points out the opportunity for brands to get noticed by the thousands of spectators who come out to watch the event all over the city, as well as online.

“Obviously it’s a great way for businesses involved in the marine sector to reach Auckland boaties,” she said. “We have hundreds of people taking part, from sailors to power boaters, paddlers and dinghy racers, even radio controlled yacht enthusiasts.

“Aucklanders have always loved to come out and watch the racing on Anniversary Day. It’s such a fun family day out, and we’re going to great efforts to let everyone in the city know this is their chance to come along and see history in the making.”

Businesses and organisations interested in supporting the Auckland Anniversary Regatta can contact Joyce Talbot on admin@regatta.org.nz or call 0800 REGATTA. For more information on the event, visit www.regatta.org.nz.
