Going into the final day of the 2014 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships three of the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team are within the top ten of their fleet with our 29er crew in good shape for a podium finish.
Ian Neely, Team Manager says; “I think the majority of the team had their best races today, it was good to see the guys doing well after a tough week.”
“It was great to see them staying focused and continuing to work on being their best at all times.”
Lying 3rd Markus Somerville and Isaac McHardie are eyeing up a podium finish in the 29er skiff class. The kiwi pair returned a 6 and a 4 today putting them in good shape to claim a medal with just one day of the regatta remaining.
Somerville and McHardie are six points behind 2nd and seven points from the overall leaders, with a 19 point gap back to 4th.
Micah Wilkinson and Jack Rogers were consistent once again with 4, 8, 10 from day four of racing in the SL16 multihull event. The kiwis retain 6th overall within four points of 7th at the end of the penultimate day.
Trent Rippey has stormed into the top ten in the boy’s Laser radial after continuing to improve his results and returning his best day yet on day four. The Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club representative came away from today with a 5, 8 in his two races and climbs the ranks to 9th overall.
Both NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team’s windsurfers are lying 16th in their respective divisions, Patrick Haybittle recording 12, 20 today, while Xanthe Bowater scored 13, 16 in the girl’s racing.
Sam Barnett and Zak Merton are in 22nd in the Boy’s 420 and Olivia Mackay are 19th in the girl’s 420.
Each nation is allowed only one entry per class and the kiwis are up against the best youth sailors from around the world.
