Interdominion Trophy

New Zealand take out Interdominion Trophy

Issue date

New Zealand won the Interdominion Schools Team Sailing Championships over Australia at Algies Bay recently, with steady sailing from the Kiwi girls proving the difference in the 62.5 - 54.5 points victory.

There was still no clear leader in any of the divisions going into the final day, Although the Kiwis had crept a little ahead for the Interdominion Trophy. The top three open teams were separated by only 1.5 points and it was equally tight between the top two girl's teams.

Westminster School won the open trophy ahead of fellow Australian rivals The Friends’ School following an epic battle between the two teams in one of the latter races of the regatta. Auckland Grammar School finished third.

Napier Girls’ High School took out the girls’ trophy over Ascham School, with New Plymouth Girls’ High School third.

Overall, the sailors at this year’s event were more skilled than previous editions, resulting in very close racing. Seven round robins (210 races) over four days were completed in generally light conditions.

Next year’s event will be held at Sandy Bay Sailing Club in Hobart in the July school holidays.
