New name for regional development managers

Issue date

The Yachting New Zealand regional support officers have undergone a rebrand and will now be known as regional development managers.

The change aims to avoid any confusion with other organisations when abbreviated to RSO - like regional sports organisations - and also better reflects the work the regional development managers do.

There are four located around the country - with three in the North Island and one in the South Island - and operate as the conduits between Yachting New Zealand and affiliated clubs. They are highly valued by clubs and class associations and are always willing to offer advice and assistance.

"Nothing really changes," Yachting New Zealand national sport development director Raynor Haagh said. "It's been something we've been talking about for a while now and we feel it helps clubs better understand the work they do."

Wayne Holdt, who looks after the lower North Island, is the longest serving of the quartet, having been in the role for 13 years. He previously worked as a Sailing... Have a Go! instructor before working with clubs in his region and he particularly enjoys the variety of the role.

"It's just helping out where you can because different clubs have different needs," Holdt said. "We are there to help. We all have a love of the sport and can support clubs through Yachting New Zealand's programmes, resources and network.

"I get the biggest thrill out of supporting the little clubs, that's really cool, and also helping at things like Opti Sail in Wellington where kids develop a life-long love of the sport.

"You have to be a people person and there are always new sailors, parents, commodores and committee members coming through. It's great to connect with them and support them as they develop in the sport."
