Waikawa Women's Keelboat Regatta

National champ to sail at Waikawa women’s event

Issue date

The Mud House Wines Women’s Keelboat Regatta is set to be the biggest women's keelboat in the country with boat entries already 50 percent ahead of the 2018 event.

Scheduled for the weekend of September 14-15 at the Waikawa Boating Club, the regatta has drawn boats and women from all over the country and a contingent of Australian sailors as well.

Among the lineup is current national women’s keelboat champion Sally Garrett (Royal Akarana Yacht Club) and her title-winning crew. The regatta will be a terrific opportunity for local and visiting crews to test themselves against the best.

It's a major advancement from the modest beginnings as a women’s-helm event. There will be males aboard some boats, but these individuals are there simply as boat owners to ensure they are covered by their insurers.

A number of boats feature a 100 percent female line-up and, in terms of actual numbers of women sailors, the event is set to be the biggest women’s keelboat event in the country.

Mud House Wines have signed on as lead sponsor for the third year running and, with boat and crew numbers increasing daily, the event looks set to establish itself as one of the cornerstone regattas of the Waikawa racing calendar and national women’s calendar.
