Myths and Facts; Community Marine Activity Hub

Issue date

Myth: Harbour Access Trust and Yachting New Zealand are ‘pushing out’ the campground
Facts:
Closure of the Takapuna Beach Holiday Park was a decision made by Auckland Council in 2013 after a comprehensive public process dealing with the Takapuna Beach Reserve Management Plan. This was not a decision made by either the Harbour Access Trust or Yachting New Zealand.
The Council’s 2013 decision under the Reserves Act cannot be revisited via the resource consent process and the closure of the campground is not an adverse effect of the Project within the context of that process.

Myth: The Reserve will be fully concreted
Fact: The landscape strategy provides large open grassed spaces (over 7000 square metres of additional green space) surrounded by appropriate layout of coastal trees and low vegetation.

Myth: All trees are being removed
Facts:
There are 61 trees / groups of trees on site. Of the 61 on site, 38 shall be removed.
Of the 38 trees / groups of trees to be removed:

a.Most are exotic (non-native) – 22 in number

b.Natives to be removed (poor to fair specimens due to health and structure)
i.1 x Puriri
ii.2 x Karaka
iii.2 x Karo
iv.1 x Cabbage
v.3 x Hedgerow of natives
vi.7 x Groups (small mixed natives / exotics surrounding existing buildings)
vii.Sapling Pohutakawa (2-3m in height)

There are 17 Pohutakawa on site.
a.11 retained in situ
b.6 to be transplanted – young and healthy and proven to transplant well (note 1 x cabbage tree will also be transplanted)

Additional natives to be planted:
a.4 x Puriri
b.1 x Karaka
c.3 x Ribbonwood

See the Arboricultural Report here on the Auckland Council website.

Myth: Yachties will take over the Reserve and boat ramp
Fact: With dedicated storage for trailers and hardstand facilities the Reserve will be more accessible and safer for the Community providing larger spaces for community passive and active recreation. Congestion for recreational boaties and fishermen on the existing parking and boat ramp areas will be reduced.

Myth: What is being proposed does not comply with the Reserve Management Plan
Fact: The proposal does comply with Council policies and the Reserve Management Plan. The Takapuna Beach Reserve Management Plan can be viewed on the Auckland Council website.

Myth: Yachting New Zealand will take over all available car parking
Fact: Yachting New Zealand Parking would be provided via lease of 15 spaces at Bruce Mason Centre – no additional parking demand generated.

Myth: This facility is just for an elite minority
Fact: The Marine Activity Hub is a community facility and sailing is an inclusive sport for all age groups and ethnic mixes.
