Applications are now open for the 2021 season of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s world-renowned Mastercard Youth Training Programme.
Long regarded as the best youth training programme in the world, it is also the most comprehensive and advanced in New Zealand. Young sailors who are looking for an intensive keelboat sail training programme needn’t look any further.
“The Mastercard YTP is structured to help athletes excel in all areas, both on and off the water," Mastercard YTP training manager Reuben Corbett said. "It provides an in-depth focus on advanced aspects of sailing including racing rules, sail trim, boat maintenance, fitness, injury prevention, in addition to life skills such as goal setting and speech making.
"It also reveals what is necessary to sail at the next level. Our mission is that you finish the season a better sailor and a better person. Upon completion of the year, students will graduate or reapply for a consecutive year or years.”
Not only do Mastercard YTP sailors take part in a lot of sailing and racing in the Elliott 7s at the RNZYS, but the RNZYS supports Mastercard YTP sailors to attend various fleet and match racing regatta’s both nationally and internationally.
The success of sailors who have come through the programme is phenomenal, with many going on to become world champions, America’s Cup sailors, Ocean Race sailors, Sail GP sailors, and many more.

The programme is open for applicants between the ages of 15-23 years old and runs for nine months from April-December 2021.
