Luck goes a long way at Snake Bank Regatta

Issue date

The Snake Bank Regatta is a very different event, open to any age, craft and speed - in fact, anything that floats.

The Marsden Yacht & Boat Club will host the annual Snake Bank Regatta on February 16 (start 10am) and will involve competitors completing one lap of Snake Bank, which is a sand bank just out from the club that dries out at low tide.

Each competitor nominates a time that they think they will complete the course in whether they're sailing, paddling or kiting - or whatever. The placings in each class is the craft that gets closest to the nominated time.

"It's something very different, which is why it's grown in popularity," northern regional support officer Kim Admore said. "It's very tidal, and that's what makes it interesting, but also stunningly beautiful looking out to the Whangarei Heads. There's also a good meal and music afterwards."

Every entry goes into a draw to win a series 4 Apple watch valued at $749. See the Marsden Yacht & Boat Club's website for more
