Kiwi's strong finish not enough for medal at OK Dinghy world champs

Issue date

A late charge wasn't quite enough for Steve McDowell to make it onto the podium at the 2024 OK Dinghy world championships in Brisbane - with the Kiwi falling a solitary point short of third place.

Britain's Nick Craig claimed his sixth title after a tight week of racing with no change at the top of the leaderboard, despite McDowell's bullet in the final race of the competition.

McDowell, who finished eighth overall at last year's world champs in Lyme Regis, had also won the third qualifying race and finished on 32 points - one behind Australian Roger Blasse who picked up a second yellow flag in the last race.

Andy Davis (GBR) was second on 27 points, 12 behind his countryman.

A tenth place in the final gold-fleet race catapulted Greg Wilcox into 10th overall, with Rod Davis dropping seven places to 17th following a 24 to end his competition.

Gordon Sims grabbed a 6 to finish 13th overall with Mark Perrow (21st), Paul Rhodes (22nd), Sean Cleary (25th), Greg Salthouse (26th), Marc Grise (31st) and Simon Probert (42nd) the other Kiwi sailors in the gold fleet.

Australian Glenn Williams pipped Brett Daniel to first place overall in the silver fleet.

Daniel, Oscar Paulich (3rd), Dean Coleman (4th) and Sefton Powrie (9th) all secured spots in the top 10 in the fleet; with Tony Bierre (20th), Phil Coveny (23rd), Tim McDowell (28th), Brendan Sneddon (31st), Philip Rzepecky (42nd) and Graham Anthony Lambert (48th) rounding out the NZ contingent at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.
