Josh Armit back to defend national wingfoil crown

Issue date

National champions from various classes will compete against past and present Olympians at the second NZ Wingfoil national championships at Manly Sailing Club this weekend.

Close to 80 sailors have already registered for the event, which will feature separate categories for open races and masters.

David Gunn, president of the class association, said the weekend's goal was "to unite the wingfoil community and enjoy some fast and fun racing".

"We also hope to have most foil brands coming to showcase their equipment," he added.

Josh Armit returns to defend his men's title from last year's inaugural event, where he won eight of the 10 races. Armit is also the national men's windfoil champion and will make his Olympic debut in the class in France in July.

However, he can expect strong competition from Sean Herbert, who dominated in this season's Triple Crown series, as well as Hugo Wigglesworth and Kosta Gladiadis, who finished first and second at the NZ youth trials last month.

Also competing in the open fleet are two-time national Moth champion Jake Pye, defending 29er champs Sean and Rowan Kensington, and former Olympic men's 470 sailor Paul Snow-Hansen.
