Two school holiday programmes are being offered by the NZ Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks, working in partnership to be the nation's leader in marine-based education experiences.
The goal of these journeys is to support the growth, development and education of young people in a marine environment.
The Hine Moana programme offers young women an inspirational trip to build self-confidence, improve communication skills, develop new and long-lasting friendships, all in a non-threatening supportive environment.
The young women will be motivated and empowered by relevant programme mentors and reflect upon their journey with self-respect and respect to Kaitiakitanga. A number of young women join through available bursaries, making this lifechanging experience available to all.
Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer challenges both male and female students between 15-17 years of age to find the grit and determination to succeed.
They will dig deep to find ways to collaborate and complete both individual and shared goals. They will forge new life skills, learn to be flexible and know that the experience has been truly life changing.
This explorative programme encourages the students to be active in the outdoors through the water-based activities of sailing and kayaking. They will learn the basics of the practical skills of navigation, reading weather, setting a course and cooking for a group.
Resilience will be tested, decision making will be challenged but the sense of personal achievement will be great.
The NZ Sailing Trust was established with a vision of creating opportunities for New Zealanders to share a unique maritime experience on Sir Peter Blake’s iconic Whitbread Round the World Race yachts.
Over and above various programmes, their core business is to deliver group sailing journeys for high school students year-round.
