ISAF Youth Words 2015: Change of regatta date forces new selection process for NZ

Issue date

ISAF has confirmed the timing of the 2015 ISAF Youth World Championship Regatta highlighting a short time turnaround of less than five months between the 2014 and 2015 editions of the pinnacle international youth regatta.

ISAF has confirmed that the 2015 ISAF Youth World Championships will be held in Langkawi, Malaysia from the 27th of December 2014 to the 3rd of January 2015. With the switch in hemisphere this is just fourand a half months after the 2014 ISAF Youth World Championships.

Because of this YNZ will change our selection process for this event. The selection process for the 2015 ISAF Youth Worlds Team (NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team) will now be held early in the 2014/2015 season

The selection of the 2015 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team will be decided at a one off regatta, to be held in the Auckland region straight after the 2014 Murrays Bay Winter Champs.

Ian Neely, Yachting New Zealand Talent Development Manager explains; “We believe these school holidays are the best time to run a selection regatta because it gives sailors time to prepare after having returned home from the previous ISAF Youth Worlds and class Youth Worlds in July.”

“Running the regatta at this time of year also allows YNZ’s Youth coaching team enough time to prepare the team for the Malaysian event,” Neely continues.

The Selection Regatta will mimic the ISAF Youth Worlds both on and off the water as much as possible.

The selection policy, Notice of Race and further information will follow shortly. Keep an eye on the High Performance section of yachtingnz.org.nz and up-coming issues of Briefings newsletter. (Sign up to receive Briefings here)
