ISAF updates on Paralympic Sailing’s future

Issue date

ISAF have informed Yachting New Zealand that they regret their recent efforts in speaking with the International Paralympic Committee have been unsuccessful in achieving their goal to get Paralympic sailing onto the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games programme.

The IPC has indicated to ISAF that it is not in a position to overturn its original decision in relation to the IFDS application.

Carlo Croce, ISAF President writes; “The ISAF Executive Board have reflected hard on this very clear guidance from the IPC President and we have come to the sad conclusion that Paralympic Sailing will not be granted a place at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. While the formal application process for 2024 inclusion does not start until 2017, there is much we can do well ahead of then to ensure our chances are maximised.”

“I know this decision will be deeply disappointing to the whole Sailing family. Please do rest assured that ISAF is totally committed to developing and promoting Disabled Sailing and ensuring that the sport returns to the Paralympic Games programme in 2024.”
