Race officials

International umpires to put skills into practice

Issue date

We all know racing can't happen without race officials and some of the world's best are in town for a World Sailing international umpire seminar.

The event is being run by Yachting New Zealand and is being hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in conjunction with the NZ Women’s Match Racing Championship, which start on Friday.

As many as 19 umpires from as far afield as Canada, the United States, Tahiti, Australia, France and China are attending. The World Sailing appointed instructors are David Pyron (USA) and Flavio Naveira (ARG).

This is the first time the seminar has been held since 2020 and will include two days of classroom work followed by three days on the water during the women's match racing regatta.

The international umpire seminar is intended to improve the standard of regional umpiring and to assist people who wish to become an international umpire.
