History plays a part in VNSBD at Motueka Yacht and Cruising Club

Issue date

Ross Loveridge, Commodore at the Motueka Yacht and Cruising Club reports on the success of Volvo National Sailing & Boating Day…

An enthusiastic group of sailors and supporters were involved in celebrating the Volvo National Sailing and Boating Day at the Motueka Salt Water baths on Sunday. The Motueka Yacht and Cruising Club hosted the event with a mix of active members, returning members, prospective young sailors and Trewavas St locals.

Eleven yachts of eight different designs made good use of the 4.1 m high tide at mid-day. The morning winds were light but picked up to give plenty of control and speed for a couple of impromptu races. The activity on the water was keenly observed by a small crowd of baths users and passers-by.

Two visitors were Rob Williams a previous club member and Commodore from the 1950s and 1960s and his wife. Rob had a number of photos of sailing action from the 1950s at the very same place. Nothing much has really changed in the actual yachting apart from not being in black and white!

In the afternoon the Motueka Yacht and Cruising club held an open day at the Port Motueka club rooms with existing and prospective club members socialising over a sausage sizzle

All in all a great day to show case the joys of sailing and boating in Motueka.
