Young 88

Head down to the Young 88 open day

Issue date

All Young 88 owners, potential owners, crew and enthusiasts are invited to a public dock rally hosted by the Young 88 Class Association in Auckland on September 22.

As many as 10 Young 88s will be on display in cruiser/racer mode and you'll have the opportunity to inspect the boats, network with potential crew, skippers and class experts, buy and sell used sails and other gear, and possibly even buy or sell a boat.

The Young 88 was designed by Jim Young in the 1980s with the brief was that there were to be no rules concessions and that it had to be a satisfactory cruiser for a young family as well as a fast racer. It's now New Zealand's most popular one-design keelboat.

The rally will be held on Sunday, September 22 (11am-2pm) at the Events Marina Berth on the south side of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Westhaven Marina, Auckland.

There will also be a free sausage sizzle for both the big and small kids.

Click here to register details and to receive the temporary event security gate code.

See the Young 88 website for more information of the Young 88 Facebook page.

The Young 88, about 8.8m (30 ft) in length and with a fractional rig, is a popular multipurpose boat that offers speed and agility for racing, with space and comfort for cruising. The first mould was built by Roger Land in the 1980s, and since then 158 have been built. There are good fleets in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Sydney.

For more information on the Young 88 class, please contact class president Mike Leyland (+64 21 554 239 or president@Young88.org.nz).
