Blake Regatta

Green Fleet strong in numbers at 20th Sir Peter Blake Regatta

Issue date

The 20th edition of the iconic Sir Peter Blake Regatta is set to unfold this weekend in Auckland and it is only fitting that Green Fleet sailors comprise the majority of competitors.

Torbay Sailing Club Commodore David Wright  says the event has traditionally attracted a strong Green fleet, as the relaxed and fun atmosphere creates a positive experience for young sailors competing in their first regatta.

“We try to make sure kids don’t feel any pressure, the main thing is to have fun. Marks used in the Green fleet include a swan, unicorn and flamingo, which also adds to the experience,” he says.

Over 370 sailors from across New Zealand are signed up for the event, and Wright says there is a feeling of excitement among regatta organisers, especially as they been forced to postpone the regatta for the last two years.

“A lot of planning had gone into it last year and we were a bit disappointed to have to cancel it. But now with a strong entry list and the ability to run it again, the whole sailing community is getting behind it,” he says.

Anticipated showings throughout the weekend include a visit from ETNZ, bringing with them the America’s Cup, along with Olympic Medalist Jo Aleh, and Peter Montgomery to award the PJ Montgomery trophy and Sir Peter Blake Trophy.

The Blake regatta honours the memory and legacy of New Zealand’s most widely respected offshore yachtsman. Sir Peter Blake led New Zealand teams to victory in around the world yacht races, and the America’s Cup.

Over the years the event has grown to be the largest small boat sailing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere, and is touted as both a festival of sailing and a celebration of the life of a great New Zealander.
