Get ready for the Great Race: Coastal Classic safety clinic for skippers and crew

Issue date

Safety is a crucial part of getting race-ready for the PIC Coastal Classic, and with the popular race just three weeks away, now is the perfect time for crews to ensure they tackle the Great Race with confidence.

The challenging 119-nautical-mile trek from Devonport Wharf in Auckland to Russell in the Bay of Islands is one of the biggest races of its type in the world and marks the start of the summer sailing season for many Kiwis.

According to Simon Hull, a member of the race safety committee, an interactive Boat Prep and Safety Clinic will be held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron at 7 pm on Tuesday, 7 October, focusing on the practical skills that make a real difference on the water.

"From man-overboard drills and essential gear checks to provisioning, understanding what it takes to sail safely through the night, and recognising hazards along the route, the clinic gives crews the tools and knowledge for plain sailing," Hull said.

The session will cover rigging inspections, safety equipment checks, preparing for rough conditions, and understanding boat systems. Experienced sailors and safety experts will lead drills and discussions to ensure every crew member knows their role and responsibilities.

Hull said the Coastal Classic's focus on safety aligns with its ongoing partnership with Yachting New Zealand. "The Coastal has always been about more than just getting to Russell fast. Working alongside Yachting New Zealand, we emphasise preparation and seamanship alongside tactics and performance."

Skippers and crew are encouraged to bring their teammates and questions to the clinic, which follows the Personal Safety Clinic held last month that focused on emergency response and building a race-ready mindset.
