Fund application for Auckland clubs 'super-easy'

Issue date

A Howick Sailing Club representative says the process of applying is so simple yachting and boating clubs in the Auckland region would be foolish not to investigate the Tāmaki Makaurau Sector Support Fund.

The fund aims to provide financial support to organisations delivering play, active recreation and sport opportunities in the Auckland region that are experiencing financial hardship in the period August 17 to October 18, 2021, as a result of extended time at Alert Levels 3 and 4. Up to $25,000 can be applied for and applications close on November 7, 2021.

Marc Frewin is rear commodore at the Howick Sailing Club and has already submitted an application to help cover for loss of revenue over the last couple of months. The club hire out their facility to things like yoga and pilates groups and have also had to delay various coaching sessions because of the ongoing lockdown.

They are also applying to help cover fixed operational costs, like utilities and insurance, as well as some essential maintenance costs.

"We are a small club and we're trying to cover our costs over the last couple of months," Frewin said. "I think every volunteer club will be living on a knife edge with grant funding, which has dried up right now.

"They have made it super-easy to apply. They even have three forums this week explaining how to apply and have people waiting on phones to help fill out the forms. There's no barrier."

You can find more information about the fund here, including details on how to join the online forums.

Frewin felt there were many reasons why clubs should investigate applying for the fund, including lost income from the inability to run holiday programmes and the cancelling of regattas.

"We don't know what we will get but if you don't ask you don't get," he said.
