Female sailing and kayaking programme on again

Issue date

Kiwi ocean racer Bianca Cook will join an upcoming multi-day sailing experience for young females on Steinlager 2, which focuses on personal achievement, empowerment and leadership.

The New Zealand Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks ran their inaugural all-female programme called Hine Moana in July, which was a five-day sail and kayak journey.

The programme was such a hit the two organisations have teamed up again to offer another experience from October 10-14.

Cook will join the all-female crew for the sailing experience on Steinlager 2 and the kayaking will be led by Lynn 'Red' Patterson, who last year kayaked around New Zealand.

Auckland Sea Kayaks and New Zealand Sailing Trust are striving to be the nation’s leader in marine-based education experiences.

Ruby Ross joined July's Hine Moana programme and put together the following video about her time away.

Ruby was nominated by her local club, the Gulf Harbour yacht Club, who partly supported her expenses.

On that programme, the 20 students spent two-and-a-half days kayaking around the islands off Sullivans Bay – setting navigational routes and then camping and making meals together – before transferring to Steinlager 2 for two days of sailing.

They learned a lot about ecology and weather patterns as well as themselves and walked away with improved self-confidence and communication skills and new and long-lasting friendships.

The New Zealand Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks have two scholarships available to worthy applicants and details about that can be found on the link above or by emailing info@nzsailingtrust.com

The NZ Sailing Trust was established with a vision of creating opportunities for New Zealanders to share a unique maritime experience on Sir Peter Blake’s iconic Whitbread Round the World Race yachts.

Over and above various programmes, their core business is to deliver group sailing journeys for high school students year-round.
