'An event like no other': Enter now for 37th Aviemore Classic

Issue date

The Aviemore Classic has grown into one of the true highlights of the New Zealand sailing calendar - and the premier trailer yacht regatta in the country. Now in its 37th edition, the event returns to Lake Aviemore over Labour Weekend (24-26 October), promising a unique mix of competitive racing, breathtaking scenery and unbeatable camaraderie.

Organiser Anna Miller says the event is special not just for sailors, but for New Zealand as a whole.

"It's the biggest freshwater trailer yacht regatta in the country, and it attracts competitors from the very top of New Zealand to the very bottom. The setting in the Mackenzie Country is spectacular, with snow-capped mountains and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Aviemore," she said.

The regatta first started in 1989 as a one-day race across the whole lake. Today, it has grown into a three-day festival of sailing and socialising, featuring up to nine short-course races, alongside national and South Island championships for selected classes. This year, the Noelex 25 South Island championship will be decided at Aviemore.

For many, the event is as much about the friendships as the racing. "What keeps me coming back is the memories and the strong family spirit that has grown over time," Miller said. "Sometimes it’s the only event we all get together. For me, as a third-generation Timaru Yacht and Powerboat Club sailor, it feels like home."

A hallmark of the regatta is "Tent City" at Otematata Harbour, where competitors gather after racing to swap stories, share meals and enjoy a vibrant social scene. Hot showers, cooking facilities and legendary evening BBQs - which also support local emergency response teams - create a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.

Whether you're chasing the coveted title, keen to sharpen your racing skills this spring, or simply want to experience sailing in one of New Zealand's most stunning locations, the Aviemore Classic has it all, Miller said.

"It's social, friendly, but also highly competitive. It really is an event like no other."
